How Team Fortress 2 Wins Hearts with Humor

Team Fortress 2 came out years ago in 2007, but for some reason it still has the power to keep players coming back for more, time and time again. Although few games have such a long lifespan, Team Fortress 2’s humor is the real heart winner regarding Soccer Games for free. And while funny moments tend to pop up in every game, these humorous aspects were built into the game to encourage a few LOLs along with the blood and gut gore.

Meet the Team

It’s not hard to catch how films like James Bond and Terminator inspired Team Fortress 2’s formidable yet lovable team. Aside from their look and voice parodies, the characters are packed with tons of personality. Just watching the short meet the team videos gives you a sense of the ridiculous world you’re about to get wrapped into. Pyro’s introduction presents him as an incredible menace, and we shudder to imagine what he thinks of as he annihilates his opponents, only to then zoom in to his thoughts of fluffy unicorns, silly baby figures, and rainbows while his flames become quaint bubbles.

Responses

Introduction videos aren’t the only time the team will leave you rolling in laughter. Throughout the game characters throw up ridiculous responses and commentary. When the soldier dominates the French spy, his silly and insulting references to his country when e says “Your white flag does not stop American bullets,” while the Demoman drunkenly kills until suddenly death brings a final insult: “I’m drunk – you don’t have an excuse.”

Silly Hat Collection

Now that Team Fortress has proved its worth throughout the years, some wonder if the game is becoming less about combat and more about collecting silly hats. From the beer slurping Bonk Helm to the Handy Man’s Handle plunger hat, you’re sure to get wrapped up in hat trading.

References

Team Fortress 2 is a clever game, which adds to the humor. References to pop culture pop and old allusions pop up everywhere, from the Black Mesa bot’s reference to Half Life, the Flight Stuff achievement’s nod to Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff’s look into manned space’s challenges, to the Demoman’s allusions to Greek mythology, Team Fortress 2 is rife with humorous references.

Fun Loadouts

There are many ways to customize your warrior of choice, and sometimes that leads to funny combinations. Loadout with the sniper’s secondary weapon Jarate, a jar of his own urine waiting ready to hurl at enemies, rendering them temporarily blinded by your yellow fluid. Otherwise use the Holiday Punch to watch as a character laughs hysterically as death approaches or turn Demoman into an immortal with the weapon Eyelander and watch as he chops off heads Highlander-style.
With so many laughs, and more references being discovered every day, it’s hard not to love Team Fortress 2.
